Day 30—All the World and Everything in It
So she documented the
trees, the genii of the plants, the
animal life, the stars, the heavens, the qualities of the earth, the tones of
music, the vibrations of the spheres. All of human, her philosophy, his art,
her insight, his reproductive faculties, the third sex’s physical body. All
mapped, catalogued, indexed. Accessible to all of creation, and making all of
creation accessible. And on the eighth day full of light, she rested. And soon
her angel face was called down, called into mankind. And people walked the
earth in skins and furs, and all was trusted. Man took riches from man, and
woman took riches from the earth, and none was abused, but all served their
full purpose.
And the day came when
the Sky God said “You must destroy this.” And clouds rolled in, and the
awe-inspiring majesty lit golden stairways up and down from the heavens, and
lightning served as the railings for life and death, and the containment of transitions.
And in it she, like Atlas, held up the world. And she spoke to Sky God:
“Every day for all my
days I must destroy what I create. Why do you appear to remind me of my duties?”
Knowing our destructive powers, humanity fears and worships us.” And she took
all of the World and condensed it onto the head of a pin.
And Sky God replied: “Your
power is only the mandate of the heavens. Without us on high you could not and
would not have done that. You tricked us into your creation in begging a form.
For we are the place that holds no bounds, and we are the ones who demand that
all the World and everything in it be destroyed daily.”
And so she replied: “I
will create more worlds, infinitely replicating this one so that as you destroy
one, another is created, and All the World and Everything In It listens just to
be birthed and killed. Your request for destruction will only be honored
conditionally, for I love death, destruction and decay, too, but out of those
come irons in the fire, ready to brand.
And Sky God said “I
will keep disorder, and you will keep all the world and everything in it.”
And she replied “You
are all the world and everything in it. Down to the microcell and the quark.
And I see all the world and everything in it. And I destroy all that is on
these pages, too.” And she flung her catalogue into the fire.
“Now go, Sky God. For I
have been called down into humankind.”
